The Complete Guide to Senior Pictures in Carmel, Fishers & Indianapolis (2027 Edition)

Senior Photo Session

If you’re the parent of a Class of 2027 senior (or you are that senior!), welcome! You’re in exactly the right place! I’ve photographed seniors around Carmel, Fishers and the greater Indianapolis area, and every sing year I get the same questions: When should we book? What should we wear? Where are your favorite spots? So I put together this complete guide to walk you through it all, from timing to outfits to pricing, so you can feel confident and prepared going into your senior session. Let’s get into it!

When to Book Your Senior Session

I’ll be honest with you: this is the question I wish more people asked earlier. March, April, September and October are hands-down my busiest months of the year, so if you have your heart set on one of these, I recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance. Here’s a quick breakdown of what each season/month tends to offer around here:

  • April-This is blossom season! The Japanese Cherry Trees and blooms of the tulips are stunning, and it’s one of my favorite times to shoot because of the soft pink of the cherry blossoms and the bold colors of the tulips.
  • June and July -wildflower season. Wildflowers is one of the top thing seniors ask for, but you have to book in summer to get them. If you want a wildflower/flower farm look, this is when local spots like Sweet Pea Flower Farm really come alive.
  • September and October- fall colors. This is genuinely the most popular season for senior pictures in Indiana, and for good reason- the light gets softer, the leaves turn every shade of orange and red, and it photographs beautifully!
  • Winter – Don’t rule this season out! If you want snow photos, urban or downtown vibes, winter is actually a great (and less crowded) time to book.

My honest advice: book your date earlier than you think you need to, even if the season you want is months away. It’s a lot easier for me to hold your spot early than try to squeeze you in during peak season.

Best Seasons (My Honest Take)

Every season has something to offer, but here’s how I’d break it down:

Fall is always my busiest season, and it’s busy for a reason- the start of your senior year, the colors are unbeatable and the temperatures are finally comfortable again after an Indiana summer. If you want senior pictures with warm tones and changing leaves, fall is it.

Summer is actually my personal favorite. The wildflowers are in full bloom, the evening light is gorgeous, and there’s something about long summer evenings that just makes for relaxed, natural-feeling sessions.

Spring brings the blossoms and fresh greenery, and it’s a beautiful in-between season – not too hot, not too cold (usually), and everything is starting to bloom.

Winter is the least photographed months, so if you’re wanting something when things are less busy or if you have your heart set on snow, this is obviously your time to do it. Winter is also the perfect time for urban settings as they are less crowded.

Whichever season you choose, just know that each one brings something different to your gallery, so don’t stress too much about picking the “wrong” one. There isn’t one!

What to Wear

Outfits are one of my favorite parts of planning a senior session, and I recommend 3 outfits for your session. I usually suggest one casual look, one dressier look, then a sweater or jacket for some layering and variety.

A few things I always recommend:

  • Long, flowy dresses add movement and a really classy feel to photos – always a fun one to throw into the mix, and something I recommend to nearly every girl I photograph.
  • Layers matter. In colder months, a sweater, flannel, vest, statement necklace, or scarf adds so much dimension to your images and gives us fun posing options. In warmer months, you can still add layers by throwing a denim jacket over a dress or another lightweight piece.
  • Have fun! Muted colors and simple patterns are reliable choices that especially pair well with my photography style. But also don’t be afraid to try something new-fun colors, patterns and outfits that may have a little flair or personality. I recommend avoiding neon colors as they can cause “color casting,” where the color from your clothing actually reflects onto your skin – not a good look! But don’t be afraid of a little fun!
  • Comfort is everything. If a piece in your closet makes you feel self-conscious or fits awkwardly, leave it out of your senior wardrobe. We’ll be sitting on the ground, walking, laying down, a moving around a lot- overly tight or too fitted clothing can make that difficult and uncomfortable.
  • Button-ups with nice pants look great on all the guys, and textured material with little to no patterns photograph really well.
  • Play with texture. Corduroy, lace, tulle and other textures add depth and interest to photos without being distracting.
  • Accessorize! Bangles, necklaces, scarves, hats and fun shoes go a long way! And don’t forget props – an instrument, sports equipment, a uniform, your pet, your car or truck or any other props that tell your story all add personality to your session.

And most importantly: be yourself! Wear something that feels like you. Outfit choice matters, but confidence is what actually shines through in photos.

Hair, Makeup & Nails

Need dress inspiration? I offer a complimentary Client Closet for anyone who books a full senior session with me – women’s Hair, Makeup & Nails

Listen! I’m not telling you that you have to get your hair, makeup and nails done by someone else, but it is an option. Some seniors choose to get their hair and makeup professionally done before their session. Some prefer to do it themselves because they already know what they like and want to do it themselves. Either way, I suggest wearing slightly heavier makeup that you normally would (just slightly), including blush and a lipstick or gloss shade that’s at least a little darker than your natural lip color.

Don’t forget about your nails either! A lot of the poses we do involve your hands being close to your face and in the frame, so you’ll want your nails to look exactly how you want them to. No chipped polish and I recommend avoiding busy patterns on nails. French manicures, light or natural colors, and even bare, clean nails all photograph beautifully.

My Favorite Locations

I get asked about locations more than almost anything else, and honestly, the Indianapolis area has so many hidden gems. But two of my absolute favorites:

  • Sweet Pea Flower Farm – This spot is gorgeous from June through September when the flowers are in full bloom. The light is gorgeous and the rows of flowers is just stunning!
  • Bottleworks Hotel – If you’re going for more of an urban, editorial feel, Bottleworks in downtown Indy delivers every time. Great architecture, great light, great backdrop for a dressier outfit.

Beyond these two, I have dozens of locations that have open fields, small town feel, cobblestone streets, big city looks, etc. Whatever vibe your want for your session, I have places to take you to!

How Many Outfits to Bring

I recommend planning for up to 3 outfits per session. My suggestion is to mix it up rather than choosing three variations of the same look- think casual, cozy, dressy, school-related, sports-related, preppy, or edgy, and pick 2-3 of these categories. This gives you a beautiful variety of looks throughout your gallery so each outfit feels dramatically different from the last, instead of your whole gallery looking the same.

Choosing a Photographer

This is such a personal decision, and I always tell parents and seniors the same thing: connecting with your photographer matters just as much as the portfolio. A comfortable, relaxed atmosphere during the session is what actually produces authentic, natural-feeling photos. So when you’re looking at photographers:

  • Look through their portfolio and make sure their editing style and overall vibe is one you actually love.
  • Read reviews or ask around -hearing from those who have worked with them goes a long way.
  • Reach out a see how they communicate. Are they responsive, personable, and easy to talk to?
  • Ask about what’s included: number of locations, outfit changes, turnaround time, and what you get at the end.

Pricing Expectations

I get this question constantly, so let’s talk real numbers. Senior portrait pricing varies depending on the photographer’s experience and what’s included, but here’s generally what you can expect in the Indianapolis market and nationally:

  • Budget Senior Photography($300-$600): Photographers in this range often offer shorter sessions, fewer images, limited outfit changes, less customization. This can be a good option for families looking for something simple.
  • Mid-range Senior Photography ($700-$1500): Many established photographers fall in this range. These sessions often include longer sessions time, multiple outfits, professional editing, a larger gallery of digital images, a more personalized experience. This is where many full-service senior photographers in the Carmel/Fishers area are positioned.
  • Luxury Senior Photography ($1500+): Higher-end senior photographers often include extensive planning, styling assistance, professional hair and makeup, multiple locations, printed artwork, a luxury experience from start to finish.

The biggest difference between pricing levels is usually not just the photos- it is the experience, customization, and amount of guidance provide. A few other things that tends to move a photographer up or down that range: experience level, demand, whether prints/products are included versus digital files only, and how many locations and outfit changes are built in. My advice: ask exactly what’s included before you book so there are no surprised when it’s time to order prints or products.

At Kyla Shurtz Photography, my goal is to provide a personalized senior experience where your senior receives beautiful, professionally edited images without the complicated upsells. Customized and special but keeping things as simple and straight-foward on your end. My senior sessions include a full gallery of digital images so seniors and their families can enjoy and share these memories for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should we book? For peak months (spring and fall), 2-3 months ahead is ideal. For summer or winter, you generally have a bit more flexibility, but I’d still recommend booking as soon as you know when you want your senior pictures taken.

Do I need professional hair and makeup? Not all all- it’s a nice option if it’s in your budget, but plenty of seniors do their own hair and makeup and look amazing. Just consider going slightly bolder than your everyday routine so it holds up in photos.

What if it rains? I’ll always keep an eye on the weather and can reschedule if needed. Indiana weather keeps everyone flexible!

Can I bring my pet or a prop? Yes please! Pets, instruments, cars, sports gear, uniforms- anything that tells your story is welcome and encouraged.

Tips for Parents

Parents, you play a bigger role in this process than you might think! A few tips:

  • Start the outfit conversation early so there’s no last-minute scrambling.
  • If your senior seems anxious about being in front of the camera, know that it’s completely normal- some seniors are thrilled for pictures, and others are only there because it’s what mom or dad wants. And some are thrilled and a little bit nervous too. Any way is okay! A good photographer will meet your senior wherever they’re at.
  • Keep in mind that senior photos are also a great source for a professional-looking headshot your teen can use going into college applications, scholarship applications, or their first job.
  • If you’re interested in borrowing from my Client Closet, reach out before your session so I can share with you the options I have.

Local School Considerations (Carmel, Fishers & Hamilton Southeastern)
