Flowing Well Park in Carmel, Indiana…have you ever been there? If not, it is a must-see in my opinion. The first dozen times I drove past it after I had first moved here, I thought nothing of it. There’s a small parking lot that leads to a small wooded park. I honestly thought it must be a mediocre walking path and it did not make it to my list of “must explore” places in Indiana. But it kept coming up in conversations and I thought I’d try it out. Boy am I glad I did! And what a gorgeous spot for Carmel Indiana Family Photos!
True, it is a small park, but is now one of my favorites! Just off the parking lot, there are two cute small white structures. One is the bathroom (so not super exciting yet…) and the other is a covering for the well that is flowing. The name of the park is Flowing Well, but I didn’t think it actually meant there was a flowing well at the park! Now it seems silly to me that I didn’t piece this together, but I didn’t think there was a well springing up in the middle of Carmel! (The little white structure behind this family is the covering for the well)
This well is a usable well and many people drive by to fill up containers of water. And if you’re not intrigued, like I am, you can check out more of the history of the well here.
Past the well is a sidewalk leading to the woods. Take this path back, cross the bridge and just a few yards later, you’ll be at a really neat rocky beach area.
This is Cool Creek and it is a beautiful, fun, AND a fantastic photo session location! I typically avoid creeks for photo sessions because of the many trees surrounding them creates unflattering light for photos. Many of these locations are in spots where the natural light is dim and there is a green hue all around (caused by all the large amount of trees). This leaves clients with a grayish-green hue to their skin tone which is not flattering on anyone!
BUT!
Flowing Well made me change my mind! It is a great creek location for photos and I’ll tell you why!
There are many trees at Flowing Well, but if you look up, you’ll see there is still access to the sky. The trees don’t completely create a canopy overhead. This allows clean light to come into this spot which is needed for a natural light photo session
You see those creamy white/tan rocks all along the shoreline? Well…that is the 2nd thing that makes this creek spot a beautiful spot for flattering photos! The natural light is let into the area from the overhead access to the sky AND these light colored stones reflect that clean light all around. This is how I avoid the grayish-green skin tones. This is how I get those gorgeous greenery AND capture flattering light on your face. It’s a recipe for a great photo location!
A few more things I love about this location:
It’s great for play! Throwing rocks in the water or even splashing in the water makes for a really fun location for families. Playful, genuine, real photos can be captured here with the gorgeous natural backdrop!
Flowing Well Park is also a location that is really convenient and easy to get to! It is just off of 116th between Keystone and the White River. It is a convenient city location that looks like it is an hours drive away from the busy city!
Best time of year for photos in this location is summertime! It’s green, it’s beautiful and perfect time to play in the water! It really is one of my very favorite photo locations (And that’s saying a lot because I have a really hard time choosing favorite locations!) The water levels can be high after a rain storm, so a word of caution about going there shortly after a big rain storm or in the spring time when there tends to be a lot of rain.
If you’ve been dreaming of Carmel Indiana Family Photos that are playful and with a gorgeous water background, Flowing Well Park is the place for you! Contact me to inquire about a photo session and I’d be thrilled to get you on my calendar!
