Hey there, senior momma (or senior yourself!) 👋
If you’re here, chances are you’ve got a graduate on your hands and a whole list of questions swirling around in your head. When do we book? What do we wear? Where do we even start?! I get it, and I promise, it doesn’t have to be complicated. I’ve photographed seniors all over Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, and Indianapolis, and I’ve put together this guide to walk you through everything you need to know to plan the senior photo experience of your dreams!
This is more than just checking a box off the senior year to-do list. Your senior photos are about capturing the last bit of your teenage years and celebrating who you are right before you step into adulthood. So let’s make sure you’re set up for a joy-filled, stress-free experience from start to finish!

Let’s start here because this is the question I get asked the most, and it genuinely matters. March, April, September, and October are my busiest months of the year, so if you have your heart set on one of these months, I recommend reaching out at least 2-3 months in advance. I only take a limited number of sessions each year, so these prime months fill up fast!
Here’s a peek at why certain months are so popular (and what I love about each season):
My biggest piece of advice: don’t wait until the month you want is already gone. Reach out, get on my calendar, and then you can relax and actually look forward to your session instead of scrambling.

Every season in Indiana has something to offer, so this really comes down to personal preference (and what kind of photos you’re picturing in your head)!
Fall is always my busiest season, hands down. Everyone wants those golden, cozy, sweater-weather photos, and I don’t blame them one bit.
Summer is personally my favorite. The wildflowers, the golden hour light that goes on forever, the energy… there’s just something about a summer senior session that feels so full of life.
Spring brings that soft, fresh, blossom-covered magic that you really can’t recreate any other time of year. If you want that dreamy, whimsical feel, spring is calling your name.
There’s no wrong answer here! Pick the season that matches the vibe you’re going for, and I’ll help you make the most of it.

Okay, let’s talk outfits, because this is where a lot of people get stuck. Here’s my best advice:
Be yourself. Truly, this is tip number one for a reason. Wear something that feels like you. Outfit choice matters, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident, because that confidence shines through in every single photo.
Be comfortable. If there’s a piece in your closet that makes you feel self-conscious or awkward, leave it out of your senior wardrobe. We’ll be sitting on the ground, laying down, walking through fields, and moving around a lot, so anything overly fitted or tight can hold you back from really enjoying the session.
Avoid anything too bright or busy. Bold patterns and neon colors can be a lot in photos, and neon colors can actually cause color casting (that’s when the color from your clothing reflects onto your skin). My advice is to stick with muted colors and simple patterns so the focus stays on you, not your outfit.
Play with texture. Corduroy, lace, tulle, knits… texture adds so much dimension and depth to your photos without being distracting. It’s one of my favorite ways to add visual interest.
Add layers. In the cooler months, a sweater, flannel, vest, or scarf adds dimension and gives us so many fun posing options. In the warmer months, you can still layer by throwing a denim jacket over a dress for that same effect.
Accessorize! Don’t forget bangles, necklaces, scarves, hats, and fun shoes. And if you play an instrument, have a car you love, or do a sport, bring it! Props like these add so much personality and tell your story in a way that a plain outfit just can’t.
Mix it up. When you’re planning your outfits, think through a few different categories: casual, cozy, dressy, school-related, sports-related, preppy, or edgy. I recommend picking 2-3 categories so each outfit feels dramatically different from the last. That way your gallery has real variety in it.

My best tip here is simple: keep it you. This isn’t the day to try a brand-new hairstyle or a dramatic makeup look you’ve never worn before. Do your hair and makeup in a way that feels natural and true to how you carry yourself every day, just polished a little more. If you want a little extra glam, that’s totally fine too! Just make sure it still feels like you when you look in the mirror. Confidence always photographs better than anything you could put on with a brush.

One of my favorite parts of planning your session is picking the perfect location, and Central Indiana has no shortage of gorgeous spots.
Sweet Pea Flower Farm is an absolute favorite of mine from June through September. It’s bursting with wildflowers and dreamy color, and it photographs beautifully no matter which direction you turn.
Bottleworks Hotel in Indianapolis is another go-to, especially if you’re drawn to more of an urban, editorial feel. The architecture and city backdrop give such a different energy than a grassy field, which is perfect if that’s more your style.
Beyond those two, I love scouting rooftop parking garages for skyline views, downtown alleys with great brick texture, open fields for that soft golden hour glow, and quiet neighborhood streets for something a little more relaxed. When we get started planning your session, I’ll ask about the type of location you’re drawn to (urban, rural, big open fields, city buildings, etc.) and suggest spots based on your vibe.

My senior photo experience includes 3-4 outfits across 1-2 locations, and I recommend planning around that. A good rule of thumb: one casual look, one dressy look, and then a sweater or jacket option for layering and variety. That combination gives you a great range in your gallery without feeling repetitive.

This is such a personal decision, and I always tell seniors and parents the same thing: find someone whose photos and personality you connect with. You’re going to be spending a couple of hours with this person, so it matters that you feel comfortable with them.
A few things worth considering as you look around:
I fully believe how you feel during your session matters just as much as how the photos turn out. If a photographer’s whole approach is about capturing your genuine personality and helping you feel comfortable in front of the camera, that’s a great sign!

Senior photo pricing can vary a lot depending who you book with, so here’s a general breakdown of what you might expect to see out there.
Standard senior sessions with a limited number of outfit changes and one location typically run somewhere in the $200-$600 range. These are a solid option if you’re looking for something simpler and more budget-friendly.
Full senior photo experiences, ones that include multiple outfit changes, more than one location, a longer session time, and a larger gallery of edited images, tend to fall somewhere between $500 and $1,000+. This is usually where you’ll find photographers who also offer extra support along the way, things like styling guidance, location scouting, and a more personalized planning process.
On the higher end, some photographers offer premium, all-inclusive experiences that can run $1,000-$3,000+, especially if they include prints, albums, or extensive travel.
My senior photo experience is $750, which includes 1-2 hours, 1-2 locations, 3-4 outfit changes, 60+ hand-edited digital images, a client-exclusive session guide, access to my client closet for wardrobe styling, and full printing rights. I keep my pricing simple on purpose: one price, no hidden fees, no confusing packages to sort through.

When should I book? At least 1-2 months in advance is ideal, especially if you want March-April or August-October.
What if it rains? Don’t stress about the weather! If the forecast looks rough for your session day, I’ll reach out a few days ahead and we’ll reschedule at no extra charge.
Do I get digital or printed photos? You’ll receive 60+ digital images through an online gallery and app, and you can order professional prints right from there too!
How long until I get my photos? I post a sneak peek on social media 48 hours after your session, and your full gallery is delivered within 3 weeks.
Do you travel? Yes! I’ve photographed seniors in over 15 states, so if you’re picturing a session somewhere outside of Central Indiana, just ask.

You’re a huge part of making this a great experience, so here are a few ways to help behind the scenes:

If your senior attends one of our local high schools, it’s worth checking their site for yearbook portrait deadlines, cap and gown pickup dates, and graduation information, since these dates can affect your senior photo timeline:
I always recommend booking your senior session well before yearbook portrait deadlines so you have plenty of breathing room, and so your senior photos feel like a celebration instead of one more thing to squeeze in. (Deadlines are often in December and April)
