Welcome to the Blog!

Welcome to the blog! I’m glad you’re here! I’m Kyla, the author of the blog and the business owner of Kyla Shurtz Photography. This is my first blog post ever!!! You can plan on this space to be used to blog photo sessions, share helpful tips to take better photos, share homeschool thoughts and resources, post about travel adventures and share a peek into our lives, but today I thought I’d start with a few introductions.

Kyla

Hey there! It’s me, Kyla. I’m the face behind the camera at Kyla Shurtz Photography. I love the outdoors, I love adventure and I love spending time with my family.

A few things about me:

  • I LOVE National Parks. My favorite is Yosemite National Park, but I’ve only been there once when I was about 11 years old. I remember seeing the tall waterfalls, the majestic stone mountains paired so beautifully next to the valley meadows. One of these days, I would like to go back, but right now we’re occupied exploring all the beautiful places Michigan has to offer.
  • I love home improvement projects! They may take me forever to complete, but I love the process of creating a vision for a space and seeing the project transform into a prettier place!
  • My favorite way to eat ice cream is in a cup with a little bit of milk poured over the top. The milk gets a little frosted over and it makes the perfect crispy edge. If you haven’t tried it, you should!

Ben

This is Ben. Dad, husband, engineer, and tech support to my business. I’m the creative dreamer and photographer of the business. He is smart, methodical and pays attention to detail. Combined, the two of us make a dynamic duo for running the business. I come up with ideas and he crunches numbers and helps me move things forward.

A few things about Ben:

  • Ben LOVES to water ski. It is his dream to one day own a boat and live close enough to a big lake so he can go for early morning skis on cool summer mornings.
  • He is a doctor (the PhD type). Ben is humble, so he is not one to toot his own horn, but I’m his wife, so it’s ok for me to brag on him! Ben is a hard worker and driven. He has always been a good student, worked hard to earn good grades, and has a love of learning. He has his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and is really good at what he does. He is a lifelong learner and I love that about him!
  • He hates bananas. He loves banana flavored things, but just can’t handle the texture of real bananas.

Bentley

Bentley is our ball full of energy. He is very creative and loves to map out ideas. The song “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman fits Bentley so well! He always has a bunch of ideas buzzing around in his head.

A few things he loves:

  • Bungee Cords: You’d be surprised all the uses bungee cords have. Swings, water bottle holders, bike accessories and the list goes on… He can find a way to use a bungee cord for almost anything!
  • Contraptions: Bentley has a deep desire to understand how things work. He loves to take things apart and see how they function. He loves to learn about machines and is constantly drawing “contraptions” that solve problems.
  • People: Bentley is a social person! He loves to talk and loves to be around people. Thank goodness he has a few siblings to keep him constant company!

Beckham

Beckham is our quiet and methodical kiddo. I see so much of his dad in him. He is silently determined and is self motivated to learn and be better. He may be quiet, but he is mighty.

A few things he loves:

  • Fire: Beckham is my pyromaniac. He loves to light candles and asks to have a fire in our backyard all summer long.
  • Super Heroes: This kid will sometimes read super hero books for an hour straight! He loves the action and seeing the good guys and bad guys fight.
  • Sugar: Beckham takes after his momma and has a STRONG sweet tooth! He’s also pretty sneaky and if I ever find empty Starburst wrappers under the bed, I know instantly who was sneaking into the candy!

Grayson

Grayson is a sweetheart. He loves and cares about people around him.

A few things he loves:

  • PAW Patrol: I don’t know what it is about cute pups that help people in their community, but it’s a winner of a show and I love the values it teaches so we’ll call that a win-win!
  • Learning: I love preschool age because they are so excited to learn and they feel so accomplished from even the smallest discoveries! Grayson is at that age and it’s fun to help him learn shapes and letters and colors and everything else!
  • Sneaking veggies: This is a hilarious trait of his. I’ll be in the other room and see his little hand reach up to the countertop, snatch a vegetable that I’ve been chopping and sneak off like he is getting away with something big. It cracks me up every time!

Ivy

Ivy is our little princess. Everyone at our house just adores her and takes such good care of her. She is such a joyful baby and loves the attention everyone gives to her.

A few things she likes:

  • Her brothers: It is so cute to watch her learn from her brothers. She looks at them so lovingly and thinks they are hilarious.
  • Music: She is so cute to watch when the music comes on. She bounces and bobs her head as a big grin slides across her face. She also will often reach for the keys on the piano and is proud of the music she plays.
  • Throwing food on the floor: I think all babies do this, but it sure does make a mess! If she doesn’t like what she is given, the food goes straight on the floor with a look of satisfaction on her face.

Our family

A few more things about our family:

I started homeschooling our kids 2 years ago and love the lifestyle it brings. We have our crazy days, and it’s a challenge trying to balance all the things in life, but mostly I love that we have been able to establish an environment of learning in our home. We love to go on family walks around our neighborhood, we love to explore new places on road trips, and our favorite dinner is kabobs over a fire in our backyard (and ending with s’mores of course!)

So there ya go! I hope you enjoyed seeing a peek into our lives! Stay tuned for next Tuesday where I’ll be sharing a blog post all about 5 struggles I face with homeschool and solutions that I’ve found helpful.

Have a great day!
